A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
